Benny was a small, round boy with rosy cheeks and an extraordinary sweet tooth. He had eaten confections most of his life, but his absolute favorite of all were jellybeans—those wonderful oval nuggets of sweetness that burst with unexpected flavors in his mouth.
One starry night, Benny couldn’t sleep. The moonlight streamed into his room, illuminating the small jar of jellybeans beside his bed. Mesmerized, he reached for a multicolored bean and just as he was about to pop it into his mouth, he heard a tiny voice.
“Benny,” it said.
Benny almost toppled from his bed in shock, for the voice was coming from the jar! He looked in and found himself peering into a magical world filled with rolling hills, candy cane trees, and rivers flowing with a rainbow of jellybeans.
With no second thought, Benny plunged his hand into the jar, expecting to feel the familiar, firm texture of the beans. Instead, he found himself shrinking and falling, falling down into the magical land of jellybeans.
He landed with a soft thump onto a hill of jellybeans that jiggled and bounced with his weight. Benny was flabbergasted yet thrilled. He began to eat his way through the majestic jellybean mountains, sampling all the flavors – bubblegum, lemon, cherry, and more.
Just then, he heard a rustle. From behind a giant licorice bush, stumbled out the most curious friends he’d ever seen. Liccy was a lovable bear made entirely of licorice twists, and Jelly was an amiable bunny, her body all shimmery and clear like a jelly drop.
“Slow down, Benny!” warned Liccy, in a voice as chewy as his body.
“You’ll give yourself a tummy ache if you keep gobbling like that!” Jelly squeaked, her jelly drop eyes filled with concern.
But Benny laughed heartily and kept devouring the jellybean hills, rivers, and trees with reckless abandon.
Soon, though, his laughter stopped. He clutched his belly, groaning with a painful swell. “Oh, I don’t feel well,” Benny moaned.
Liccy and Jelly gave each other knowing looks, and with Jelly hopping ahead, they led the doubled-over Benny to the nearby Peppermint Palace which was ruled by no other than Queen Candy Cane, the wise and sweet ruler of the land.
Looking at the now pale and sickly Benny, the queen clicked her candy-cane scepter, muttering, “Sweet as sugar, but also as swift. Moderation dear, or you’ll drift.”
Suddenly, Benny felt his stomach ease. He gave a sigh of relief and thanked the Queen. Then, understanding her words, he looked guilty. “I understand now, Queen Candy Cane,” he said thoughtfully. “I must learn to enjoy everything in moderation.”
Queen Candy Cane smiled, her teeth a glittering white. “And don’t forget to share, dear Benny,” she added. “There’s sweetness in sharing too.”
With those words, Benny found himself back in his bedroom, a gentle morning light streaming through the window. He blinked at the jellybean jar on his bedside table, not completely sure if it was all a dream. But when he noticed the taste of jellybeans still in his mouth, he grinned.
That afternoon, Benny did something he hadn’t done before. He brought his cherished jar of jellybeans to the park and shared them with all his friends, delighting in their joy and laughter.
Each sweet, wonderfully flavoured jellybean didn’t just remind Benny of his incredible adventure, but also the important lessons he learned in the jellybean realm – the sweetness of moderation and sharing.
