Pekingese Prize: Ellie’s Tale of Triumph and Turmoil

id

Ellie, the Pekingese, was a small, affectionate creature with a heart as big as her personality. Her alert, intelligent eyes sparkled with a mischievous glint that endeared her to everyone she met. She was the pride of her owner, Mrs. Hargrove, a widow who lived alone in a small, dilapidated house on the outskirts of town.

One day, a flyer arrived in the mail announcing a “Cutest Dog” contest. Mrs. Hargrove, despite her pessimistic outlook on life, decided to enter Ellie. She had always believed that Ellie was the cutest dog in the world, and this was her chance to prove it.

The day of the contest arrived. Dogs of all shapes and sizes paraded around the park, their owners preening and fussing over them. Ellie, however, stood out. Her fur was brushed to a glossy shine, her eyes sparkled with excitement, and her tail wagged non-stop. The judges were clearly impressed.

When the time came to announce the winner, the crowd held its breath. The judge, a stern-looking woman with a clipboard, cleared her throat and announced, “The winner of the ‘Cutest Dog’ contest is… Ellie the Pekingese!”

The crowd erupted in applause. Mrs. Hargrove beamed with pride as she held Ellie up for everyone to see. But as the cheers died down, a murmur of discontent spread through the crowd. Some of the other dog owners were not happy. They claimed that the contest was rigged, that Ellie had won because she was a purebred, a symbol of tradition in a world that was rapidly changing.

The next day, Mrs. Hargrove found a threatening note on her doorstep. “Your dog didn’t deserve to win,” it read. “We’ll make sure she doesn’t enjoy her victory.”

Mrs. Hargrove was shaken. She had never imagined that winning a simple dog contest could stir up such animosity. She feared for Ellie’s safety. But Ellie, oblivious to the danger, continued to wag her tail and look at the world with her bright, intelligent eyes.

Days turned into weeks, and the threats continued. Mrs. Hargrove reported them to the police, but they didn’t take her seriously. “It’s just a dog contest, ma’am,” they said. “No one’s going to harm your dog.”

But Mrs. Hargrove wasn’t convinced. She started to take precautions. She never let Ellie out of her sight. She kept all the doors and windows locked. She even bought a small, handheld alarm that she carried with her at all times.

One night, she was awakened by a noise. She grabbed the alarm and rushed to Ellie’s room. The window was open, and Ellie was gone. Mrs. Hargrove’s heart pounded in her chest as she ran outside, calling Ellie’s name.

The night was dark and silent. There was no sign of Ellie. Mrs. Hargrove felt a chill run down her spine. She knew then that the threats were real. Someone had taken Ellie, and she had no idea if she would ever see her beloved pet again.

As she stood there, alone and afraid, she made a vow. She would find Ellie, no matter what it took. She would not let the forces of change and resentment win. She would fight for Ellie, for tradition, for the belief that every dog, no matter its breed, deserved to be loved and cherished.

And so, the search for Ellie began. A search that would take Mrs. Hargrove into the heart of a community divided by change and tradition, where the line between love and obsession was blurred, and where the stakes were higher than she could ever have imagined.
